Doctors Hospital features a three-room operating suite, eight-bed intensive care unit, the latest diagnostic equipment including CAT scan, nuclear medicine, X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, MRI, full scale clinical laboratory, rehabilitation services department, and a maternity wing equipped with a newborn nursery.
The hospital pioneered the use of such state-of-the-art medical equipment as the 16 slice CAT scanner, MRI scanner and nuclear medicine in The Bahamas; and we are committed to providing all Bahamians and Tourists alike with the most technologically advanced quality healthcare services in The Region.
Doctors Hospital was formerly named The Rassin Hospital, founded in 1955 by the late Dr. Meyer Rassin, a leading orthopedic surgeon who opened the original 20,000 square-foot, 24-bed medical facility. The Rassin Hospital was the most modern hospital in the West Indies for its time and a long time dream of Dr. Meyer Rassin to provide quality healthcare to The Region. The original hospital consisted of 16 patient rooms that accommodated 25 patients and state-of-the-art equipment, brought in from the United States and United Kingdom.
A group of Bahamian physicians bought the facility in 1986 and renamed it Doctors Hospital. In 1993, the hospital completed an $8.5 million, 50,000-square-foot expansion and then became a publicly traded company in 1999.
Today, the 72-bed Doctors Hospital, accredited by Joint Commission International, is the most modern acute care privately owned healthcare facility in The Caribbean with over 500 employees ready to serve you. There are more than 200 highly trained and dedicated physicians on our medical staff representing nearly every medical specialty.
Each and every patient has a healthcare team of medical professionals that work together to enhance your stay. Patients may choose between private and semi-private rooms. Every room is comfortable, well lit, and fully equipped with satellite television, air conditioning, telephone, and wireless internet access.
Doctors Hospital’s Emergency Room is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to provide you with the optimum in trauma care and emergency medical services. All doctors and nurses in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staff are Advanced Cardiac and Trauma Life Support certified.
All nurses are Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certified. These certifications are licensed through the American Heart Association, allowing us to provide the highest level of care. Our Emergency team is capable of handling any major or minor medical emergency, and our emergency room is outfitted with the latest, most advanced equipment, including specially designed treatment bays, to ensure that you are treated with speed and accuracy.
The private ambulance/Emergency Transport Services (ETS) is a natural extension of our emergency services if you require emergency transportation. Every ambulance is equipped with the latest technological equipment and is operated by a team of medical professionals, including an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), a Medic, an Emergency Vehicle Operator, and a certified Dispatcher that stays in constant contact with the ambulance crew.
Specially trained and certified critical care doctors and nurses man the locally renowned eight-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the sixteen-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) round-the-clock. ICU and IMCU are equipped with ventilators, specialized heart catheters, telemetry units, and haemodynamic monitoring.
As a pioneer of surgical services in the Bahamas, a highly competent staff of skilled surgeons and clinical nurses supervise three operating theatres and an eight bed patient recovery area. Our surgical expertise includes endoscopic, laparoscopic, gynecological, neuro surgery, orthopedics, hip and knee replacement, spine surgery, kidney transplant, cardiac catheterization and open-heart surgery as well as minimally invasive procedures such as laser and plastic surgery.
The first ever open-heart surgery in the Bahamas was performed at Doctors Hospital in 1994. Our world-class cardiac program has saved many lives. The Doctors Hospital cardiac program is a full-service, multi-disciplinary program that cares for public and private patients. It combines special diagnostic procedures with education, advanced patient care, and rehabilitative therapy.
Diagnostic procedures offered in the cardiac program include pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, cardiac catheterization, coronary angioplasty and stent procedures, and pacemaker insertion (temporary and permanent). All of these procedures except for the surgeries are performed in the catheterization lab, which is outfitted with the latest medical equipment. Heart and circulatory disease is a major killer in the Bahamas. The Doctors Hospital cardiac program is our tool for treating and preventing it.
The birth of a child is a momentous occasion, and the Maternity Unit at Doctors Hospital strives to make that experience as safe, private, and comfortable as possible. There are three labor and delivery rooms and ten beds in private or semi-private rooms. Husbands are encouraged to accompany their wives during and after the delivery. The nursery can accommodate up to twelve babies, and features three full-size isolettes. Doctors Hospital also provides childbirth classes for expectant mothers and their spouses under the guidance of registered midwives.
The ancillary departments of Doctors Hospital are an integral part of the hospital that provide testing, in-and-outpatient services, and education for our patients. These include Rehabilitation Services, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, New Providence Dialysis Unit, Blood Bank, and retail Pharmacy. Outfitted with the most modern, high-tech equipment, the Lab ensures prompt and reliable diagnosis.
Doctors Hospital is strongly committed to continuing education for all of our associates. We firmly believe that education should not stop after one’s academic career, but rather it should be an ongoing aspect of a person’s life. The Organizational Learning Department has a full time staff, which organizes seminars and classes (onshore and offshore), to keep all staff abreast of current professional and medical developments. The department also offers courses for medical professionals and the general public in basic life support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), First Aid, CPR (Infant, Child and Adult), and Pediatric Life Support (PALS).
As part of our commitment to the community we serve, Doctors Hospital also offers free health fairs and lectures for the general public so they can be educated and learn how to lead healthier lifestyles.
