Each time you visit a hospital, physician, or other healthcare provider, a record of your visit is made. Typically, this medical record contains your symptoms, examination and test results, diagnoses, treatment, and a plan for future care or treatment.  This an essential part of the health care that is provided for you. It is the role of Health Information Management (HIM) professionals that ensure your health record is complete, accurate, confidential, secure and released only according to strict laws, and available when needed most.
HIM professionals are responsible for the collection, storage, coding, processing, analysis, interpretation, application, privacy, and sharing of information for a wide range of purposes in healthcare settings.  Today, HIM professionals are increasingly performing these tasks using emerging technology and helping healthcare professionals access the information they need to support clinical decision-making, research financial management, and personal health management.
During the month of November, health professionals celebrated Health Information and Technology (HI&T) Week under the theme "Accuracy You Can Count On - Information You Can Trust".
The HIM professional is an important connection between doctors, patients, insurance providers, and other movers and shakers in the healthcare field. By maintaining, collecting, and analyzing health information, the HIM professional makes an important contribution to the delivery of quality care. In short, HIM professionals affect the quality of patient information—and patient care—at every touch point in the healthcare delivery cycle.
“Having skilled HIM professionals on staff ensures that Doctors Hospital has the right information available when and where it is needed while maintaining the highest standards of data integrity, confidentiality, and security” stated Marsha Sands, Doctors Hospital’s HIM Coordinator.  “For much of our history, medical records have been a paper-based business. Now, working toward a fully electronic future, we are advancing the implementation of electronic health records by leading key industry initiatives and advocating high standards for our Associates. We consistently strive to keep one step ahead of current HIM practice through accreditation of cutting-edge academic programs and professional development opportunities that include comprehensive continuing education.”

Both Doctors Hospital and the Public Hospitals Authority honored key physicians and persons within their departments for the exemplary work done within the Health Information Management Department.
